Galen Newman

Dr. Galen D. Newman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University (TAMU). At TAMU, he also serves as Interim Department Head and Director of the Center for Housing and Urban Development. Historically, he has also served as Coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Programs. He is also Past President of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) and served as both Vice President for Research and Creative Scholarship and Track Chair for CELA. Dr. Newman graduated from the Planning, Design, and the Built Environment Ph.D. program at Clemson University in 2010. At TAMU, he teaches undergraduate and graduate landscape architecture and planning studios, landscape architecture history courses, and advanced visualization courses. His research interests include urban regeneration, land use science, spatial analytics, community flood resilience, and community/urban scaled design. His current research focuses on the integration of urban regeneration and urban flood resilience. His work has been published in more than 90 high quality peer-reviewed outlets including the Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA), Landscape and Urban Planning, Environment and Planning B, Landscape Research, and Cities. His work has been funded through numerous internal and external funding sources (totaling over 40 million dollars) including the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He has also won many awards for his research. Some selected awards from his individual research and publications include the Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship Award from CELA, the Best Paper Award from JAPA, a Presidential Impact Fellow from Texas A&M University, and a Most Influential Instructor from Design Intelligence. For his teaching efforts, his has also led many efforts to provide service learning opportunities which have also won national and state awards. Selected awards from his teaching efforts include in five American Society of Landscape Architects National Awards (ASLA), thirty State Level Awards, and being designated as a Service Learning Faculty Fellow at TAMU.

Dr. Newman’s interests include urban regeneration, land use science, spatial analytics, flood resilience, and community/urban scaled design.
