UT construction industry head joins A&M construction science department
The former director of University of Texas at Austin’s Construction Industry Institute, Stephen Mulva will join the Department of Construction Science as a research professor starting August 1, 2022.
Mulva, who has experience improving the management and finance of capital projects at big industry firms including Phillips Petroleum, Bechtel and Fluor, will be leading several new initiatives to improve safety and operating performance of projects in the built environment.
“Globally, Stephen has been at the forefront of creating innovative approaches to improve the capital efficiency of large architecture, engineering and construction projects in a variety of markets for over 25 years,” said Patrick Suermann, interim dean of the School of Architecture. “His unique background, vision and leadership style will be a catalyst for the continued development and growth of construction science and architecture at Texas A&M.”
Mulva is currently doing research aimed at reinventing the commercial ecosystem for built environment projects in the hopes of developing new solutions that can improve people’s standard of living.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering and a master’s degree in civil engineering, both from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his doctorate in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management) from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has held academic positions at Texas State University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
