An interdisciplinary collaboration between the Texas A&M School of Architecture, College of Medicine, and the School of Public Health. This lecture series features renowned speakers from industry and academia.

There is a convergence of need, demand, and self-preservation for greatly improved global health. The COVID-19 pandemic has geometrically exacerbated these needs:

In recent decades the world has moved swiftly toward global communications, education, transportation, tourism and hotels, militaries, but sadly global health has not kept up with the geometrically accelerating challenges and demands that have left global health so far behind. Today there are estimates that the population of planet earth exceeds 7.7 billion people.

Winston Churchill said, “We shape our buildings and then they shape us,” nowhere is this more true than in Architecture for Health.

The purpose of the Spring 2022 Architecture for Health Lecture Series is to probe the issues, pitfalls, problems, opportunities, and case studies in an international Architecture for Health practice.

The series will appeal to the general public, health consultants, nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, landscape architects, architects, engineers, interior designers, construction firms, health care administrators, facilities management, hospital engineers, materials management, and other related disciplines.

Registration Instructions & Requirements

Students attending the lectures can earn 1 credit hour by enrolling in ARCH 481, Section 500 for undergraduates or ARCH 681, Section 601 for graduates. Med school 3rd/4th year students can attend these lectures as a student initiated elective. All lectures are required with one-page lecture summaries turned in for credit and students must attend each lecture in person. Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA, FACHA, FHFI, LEED AP, Chairman Emeritus, HKS Inc., Adjunct Professor of Architecture, Texas A&M University. Donor of the Ronald L. and Sondra Skaggs Endowed Professor in Health Facilities Design and the Skaggs-Sprague Endowed Chair in Health Facilities Design. He is also an outstanding alumnus of the School of Architecture.

Joseph Sprague

Joseph G. Sprague, FAIA, FACHA, FHFI, Principal and Senior Vice President (Ret), HKS Inc., President Facilities Guidelines Institute; Past President of the ACHA-American College of Healthcare Architects. Donor of the Skaggs-Sprague Endowed Chair in Health Facilities Design. He is also an outstanding alumnus of the School of Architecture.

Craige Beale

Craig Beale, FAIA, FACHA, LEED AP, is a principal (Ret) at Knox Advisors and donor of the Craig & Julie Beale Endowed Professor of Health Facilities Design and SHEA, the Student Health Environments Association. He is also an outstanding alumnus of the School of Architecture.

Allen Sharp

Allen C. Sharp, Jr. AIA ’53

July 4, 1932 – November 18, 2010 

Principal, Wingler & Sharp Architects & Planners, Inc. 

Allen C. Sharp, Jr. was a Texas A&M graduate, with a degree in Architecture. As co-owner and principal of Wingler & Sharp Architects & Planners Inc., Allen’s 58-year contribution to the architectural profession is best known by a body of work in support of the US military men, women, and their families. Allen was an integral part of the design of over 400 Department of Defense installations including approximately 10-0 health and hospital facilities in the United States and around the world. He was also involved in mentoring students in health facilities design at Texas A&M University. 

Allen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marsha Sharp (pictured), daughter Marla Sharp of Wichita Falls, Texas, son Douglas Sharp and his wife Margie, of Arlington, Texas, granddaughters Sarahbeth Sharp Pipkin and her husband Taylor, and three great-grandchildren Lucy Beth, James Kirk and Caroline Clemmons Pipkin of Houston, Texas. 

Isaac Amos

Dr. Isaac Thompson Amos recently died of COVID-19, and to all the Amos family for their leadership in creating Thompson & Grace Medical City for the people of Nigeria, our sincere condolences on yours and our loss.
