Students can earn a construction science degree in the Rio Grande Valley

Texas A&M’s construction science degree program in McAllen is part of the rapidly growing Rio Grande Valley. Now, students don’t need to leave the valley to get a first-rate path to a management position in the construction industry.

“Students now have the opportunity to pursue a Texas A&M undergraduate construction science degree in McAllen from beginning to end, freshman to seniors,” said Edelmiro Escamilla, a construction science faculty member in McAllen. “This is a pathway to a successful career in construction management.”

The program is housed in Texas A&M’s Higher Education Center in McAllen.

The degree program in McAllen began with an initial group of students in fall 2021. “These students are Aggies, through and through,” he said. “And they can receive an Aggie Ring when they graduate.”

It’s a program with broad support in the valley, he said.

“Industry leaders have told us they’re looking for to the next generation of construction managers in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Escamilla. “They’re already familiar with Texas A&M construction science — because many of the valley’s industry leaders are our former students.”

“Support for our program to meet the industry’s needs is very strong,” he said.

The construction science curriculum offers a very diverse array of classes in estimating, scheduling, materials and methods, leadership, safety, mechanical systems, structures, project management and more.

The degree offering in McAllen is also part of the Department of Construction Science’s drive to bring more minorities and women into the construction industry.
